Rolands Pētersons, a Member of the Board of Norman Logistics Sp.zo.o recently analysed tourism in the Portuguese economy. "Tourism is one of the key drivers of economic growth in Portugal; the industry has already provided more than 1 million direct and indirect jobs in the country, as confirmed by the World Travel and Tourism Council (WTTC).1 Portugal has always been one of the favourite European destinations and it makes perfect sense that the development of the tourism industry in the country has been stable and has promoted the economy", Rolands Pētersons (Latvia), Member of the Board of Norman Logistics Sp.zo.o. says.
Many countries can learn from the experience of Portugal, organising the process of economic recovery after the crisis through targeted structural reforms2. Over the past years, tourism development has been at an all-time high. The upturn occurred when, after the debt crisis of 2011-2014, the government and local business agreed on tourism as a driving force for future growth3.
"WTTC observations evidence that Portugal is among the Top 5 most visited European countries, it is now important to work hard to maintain these positions", Rolands Petersons (Latvia), Member of the Board of Norman Logistics Sp.zo.o. explains. "However, it is also important to plan measures ensuring that Portugal will not suffer from excessive interest of tourists: infrastructure should be developed accordingly, the offer and availability of accommodation should be increased, the public transport system should be improved over the years."
The WTTC projections suggest that, if the tourism in Portugal continues to develop at its current level, more than a million additional jobs in this sector could be available in the country by 20284.
Success in tourism development has also contributed to the development of new business ideas. For instance, numerous successful start-ups in the hospitality industry were created in Portugal recently.
